SELF PORTRAITS BY NIKOS GYFTAKIS

Nikos Gyftakis was born in Athens, Greece in 1981. He studied Painting, at the School of Fine Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1999 - 2005) and also Theatrical Stage and Costume Design (2001-2003) at the dpt. He now lives and works between Athens and Stockholm. - “It is in my portraits that the work of art is organized around a dominating, dynamic topic and it is fully radiant with movement, flow and musicality. With the line being the main medium, the curves replace the corners and the continuity comes in place of the discontinuity. The are no contour lines and the figures, the light, and the color, all flow in space and in the surroundings.”

Ashley Mackenzie tackles complex questions about the relationship between mind and body, creating conceptual, illustrative works that stand at the cross-section of the philosophy of the mind and neuroscience. “As our knowledge of the brain becomes more comprehensive, it seems like the idea of the soul exists only in the gaps of our understanding,” Mackenzie writes on her website. Bodies melt like pools of liquid in these placid, sparsely-detailed illustrations as they visualize the inner workings of the mind. “Pisces”

Colored Balloons

At the Edinburgh International Science Festival

“The sculpture, created by world renowned New York experimental artist Jason Hackenwerth, represents the artist’s interpretation of the legend of Aphrodite and Eros. The spiraled double helix structure has been created with more than 10,000 coloured balloons and hangs over 40 feet tall.

Jason, who was born in St Louis and now lives and works in New York and has exhibited his work around the world at galleries and museums including the Guggenheim in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and at the 51^st Venice Biennale as well as in Hong Kong and Mexico. Pisces is the first artwork that he has created in Scotland.

It has taken three members of Science Festival staff six days to blow up the 10,000 balloons which have been woven into an intricate three dimensional structure by Jason and his assistant Leah Blair. It has not only proved to be backbreaking work, but Jason and his team have also to wear ear defenders to protect their hearing from the constant popping and squeaking of balloons, and protective tape on their fingers.

The sculpture will be on display in the Grand Gallery until 14^th April.”

Look forward to small photosets of my trip behind the scenes at the Chicago Field Museum in the coming days! There were so many remarkable things, it’d be rude not to share.

We came across this specimen in the mammal prep lab waiting to be reunited with the rest of its skeleton, presumably still being processed in their dermestid colony. It’s the spinal column of a gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) that was donated by the Lincoln Park Zoo once the animal died.

What is absolutely jaw-droppingly fascinating about this specimen is that the entire spinal column is fused. All of the vertebrae have grown together to form one continuous, smooth bone, rather than being comprised of multiple moving vertebrae. There is also a large healing pathology towards the top of the lumbar vertebrae and at the bottom of the thoracic. An obvious reason for this to have occurred is because this animal had a limited range of movement as it lived in a zoo enclosure for the majority, if not duration of its life.

It makes me wonder what human skeletons must look like if we continue to live our lives in front of computers, heavily restricting our range of movement day-in and day-out.
